Whether you’re paying the dog walker, collecting cash for a group gift or settling up with friends, most of us need to send and receive small payments all the time. And many Americans don’t regularly carry cash and checks.

Zelle is the ideal tool for these types of payments. Using the First Merchants mobile app, you can easily send and receive money from friends and family with Zelle1, even if the recipient uses a different bank or credit union.

Getting started with Zelle is easy. Here’s what you need to know before you get started with Zelle.

Only send money through Zelle to people you know and trust, like family and friends1. Payments in Zelle move directly from bank account to bank account, so it’s critical that you know and trust anyone you send money to. It’s just like cash — once you hand it over, it can be tough to get back. That’s why we recommend using Zelle only with friends and family who you trust1.

Double check you have the right phone number or email address before you send money. To find a recipient through Zelle, you need to know their phone number or email address. Make sure the information you have is up to date to ensure it’s sent to the right person.

Money sent through Zelle is typically available within minutes2. If you send money to someone who isn’t enrolled with Zelle, they’ll receive a notification detailing how they can enroll. Once they sign up, the payment will move directly to the recipient’s account.

Signing up is fast and simple. Once you understand the basics, you’re ready to start using Zelle. It’s easiest to access the app through the First Merchants mobile app. If you haven’t already, download the First Merchants mobile app, available on both Android and Apple devices. Then follow the instructions below:

  • Log into the First Merchants mobile app.
  • Tap the plus sign (+) at the bottom of the screen, then select the Zelle icon.
  • Enroll your U.S. mobile number or email address.
  • That’s it. You’re free to send money to friends, family and anyone else you trust.
