First Merchants Staff Gives Back to MOMs

August 19, 2011

MUNCIE, Ind. - First Merchants Bank employees recently traded in their work clothes for play clothes as they left their offices to volunteer at Motivate Our Minds (MOMs). On August 18 and 19, nearly 50 First Merchants Bank employees donated time and labor to clean up the MOMs facility at 2023 East Highland Avenue in Muncie. MOMs, an organization dedicated to helping “under-served” students in Delaware County, was chosen as a benefactor of the First Merchants’ Community Days program.

First Merchants volunteers painted walls and cabinets, buffed and scrubbed floors, moved furniture and weeded lawns. They also educated and entertained MOMs youth with a workshop about financial management information in a format modeled after the game show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” After the workshop, the “Banker Bikers” challenged their students to a tricycle race.

According to a Muncie Star Press article by Michelle Kinsey, MOMs executive director Monique Armstrong estimated that First Merchants employees volunteered more than $7,200 worth of manpower hours.

After a hard day’s work and loads of fun, the First Merchants group was proud to present a $1,000 check to MOMs, enough to fund a semester of extra-curricular activity for 20 students.
